Why Chair Tap Dance?
I've been a dance instructor for over 30 years. A few years ago, I discovered a landmark 21-year study showing that dancing is the single most effective activity for reducing dementia risk in older adults — more than reading, crossword puzzles, swimming, or golf.
I knew I had to bring tap dance to seniors. When I approached local senior communities, every single one asked for chair classes. So I developed Chair Tap Dance®, and the response from seniors blew me away.
My students range from their 60s to their 90s. Some danced when they were younger, and some never before. They tell me they feel stronger, sharper, and more confident. One student is 91 years old and learning tap dance for the first time and she is thrilled.
I created this online course so that no matter where you live, you can experience exactly what my in-person students do, and at your own pace, in your own home, from your favorite chair.Â

Let's Dance! Here's What's Inside:
Chair Tap Dance for Seniors is crafted for older adults, combining the joy of learning basic tap steps and dances with the benefits of mental and physical exercise.
MODULE 1:
Benefits and Getting Started
Before your first step, you'll learn why tap dance is so powerful for your brain and body and the research behind it. I'll walk you through how the course works so you feel confident from day one, and help you choose the right tap shoes or tap covers for your feet.
MODULE 2:
Warm-Ups
Five fun warm-ups to choose from. Each is just 2 to 4 minutes — to get your body moving and ready to dance. These are gentle exercises and designed specifically for older adults. You'll finish each one feeling energized and ready to learn!
MODULE 3:
Your Tap Steps and Dances
This is where the magic happens. You'll learn 22 tap steps gradually — just 3 or 4 at a time, and then put them to use in a real dance. By the end of this module you'll have learned 8 complete choreographed dances and be able to tap along to almost any song you love.
MODULE 4:
Practice Makes Perfect
Now that you know the steps, it's time to use them in 10 more dances. This is where you really start to feel more confident. Your body gets stronger, your mind gets sharper, and the fun gets bigger!
MODULE 5:
Just Dance!
This module is all 23 dances in one place so you can press play and go. No instructions or review, just the routines. Dance for a quick session or a longer workout, whenever the mood strikes.Â
MODULE 6:
Cardio Tap
Ready to get your heart pumping? These exciting, upbeat dances are designed to give you a real cardiovascular workout, but always seated and safe. Your heart, your lungs, and your mood will all thank you.

Why Tap Dance Is So Good For You
It's one of the best things you can do for your brain.
A landmark 21-year study found that dancing frequently reduces the risk of dementia by 76% in older adults — more than any other activity. That's not a small number. Dance requires your brain to constantly learn and remember new patterns, which keeps it sharp and active.
It makes your body stronger — without putting you at risk.
Even seated, tap dance builds real strength in your legs and core. Students tell me they feel steadier on their feet and more confident when walking. And because you're always in your chair, there's no risk of falling.
It's genuinely good for your mood.
Movement releases endorphins — your brain's natural feel-good chemicals. But beyond the science, there's something about music and rhythm that just makes people happy. And we are tapping to songs you love from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. My students leave smiling every single time.

Tap class is the best part of my day! It’s so much fun that I forget what great exercise I’m getting. First, my husband saw how much fun I was having and started joining in and now my granddaughter brings her tap shoes over and we tap together!

I do feel like it’s the perfect way to exercise my brain and my body at the same time. And I’m not too old because I am learning so much!
