Get the physical and mental benefits of tap dance in a safe, seated environment.

Chair Tap Dance for Seniors is specifically designed for older adults to not only learn basic tap steps and dances, but to also exercise the mind and body while having a lot of fun!

Why Chair Tap Dance?

Many older adults know they need to exercise and may have loved to dance in the past or wanted to learn, but now may have physical limitations or fear of falling.

I’ve been a dance instructor for over 30 years, but mostly for children and teenagers. A couple of years ago, I came across a 21-year study by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine about how beneficial dance is for older adults.  Turns out, it’s not only a great physical workout, but it’s one of the best cognitive exercises out there. So, I approached senior living communities in my area about teaching tap dance, but what I found is that they all wanted chair classes.

I started teaching Chair Tap lessons in my area and it has been very successful.  My students not only love learning tap dance, but also tell me they feel physically stronger, especially in their legs and core.  Even though we are sitting, they say that when walking, they feel more steady on their feet and have improved balance.  This is due to building core strength.

Students have also reported that they are experiencing mental benefits such as quicker reaction time and improved memory recall.

For these reasons and more,  I have created an online course to reach as many people as possible.

Through this course, seniors have access to tap dance lessons that will help them cognitively and physically, as well as bring them joy.

Introducing...Chair Tap Dance for Seniors

Chair Tap Dance for Seniors is crafted for older adults, combining the joy of learning basic tap steps and dances with the benefits of mental and physical exercise.

The Chair Tap Journey

MODULE 1:

Benefits and Info

You will learn about the cognitive, physical, and mental benefits of learning tap for seniors with some recent studies to back up those claims. I will explain the best way to navigate the course to ensure success.  In additon, you will discover different options for tap shoes or tap shoe covers, as well as a portable tap floor for those who are worried about tapping on the floor in their home.

MODULE 2:

Warmups

This will include 5 songs between 2 and 4 minutes long to lightly stretch head to toe and get moving and warmed up.  This will raise your heart rate and increase blood flow to the muscles, which delivers oxygen and nutrients needed for energy production. This will help you maintain cardiovascular health and endurance during exercise. Warming up also gradually increases muscle temperature, which improves muscle elasticity and contraction efficiency. This can lead to better performance during exercise and reduced fatigue.

MODULE 3:

Your Tap Steps and Dances

In this module, you will learn 22 tap steps, 3 or 4 at a time, and then you will learn a dance using the steps taught in that lesson.  By the end of this module, you will have mastered the basic tap dance steps, completed 8 choreographed dances, and be able to apply this knowledge to any music or song of your choice!

MODULE 4:

Practice Makes Perfect

Here you will incorporate the tap steps you previously learned in 10 more dances that will help tone your body and sharpen your mind.  Learning the dances will not only be a lot of fun, the benefits will be physical, mental, and emotional!

MODULE 5:

Just Dance!

This last module is all the dances you learned in the previous lessons, but without explanation of steps or review.  After you've mastered the steps, here you will be able to just dance!  There are 28 dances in here, so you can do as many or as few as you want at a time.  Make it a quick session or a longer workout for your brain and body!

MODULE 6:   BONUS #1

Get in Tip TAP Shape

In this module, you will use all those tap steps you learned in faster-paced dances to get your heart pumping, burn calories, and increase blood flow, contributing to overall health and well-being.

MODULE 7:  BONUS #2

Holiday Dances

Great for a fun holiday performance or just for yourself, you will incorporate some favorite moves into two festive dances for the season!  If you'd like to do a performance, send me any questions or video for help with anything you might need.  This can also be a fun activity to do together when family is visiting!

But that's not all!

Chair Tap Dance for Seniors comes with these bonuses to get more benefits, and have even more fun!

Bonus #1: Holiday Dances:

These are dances that can be performed in senior communities for an audience, for your family members, or just for holiday fun!  In these dances, you will apply steps you learned earlier in the course, and I will review them before each dance as well.  I am available by Zoom or email to provide help to you and/or caregivers to put together a performance.  (I do this in my local community.)

Bonus #2:  Cardio-inspired Tap Workout dances:

These are simple, but effective, dances to get the heart pumping and get in a quick cardio workout. Cardiovascular exercise offers a wide range of benefits for seniors including improved heart health, weight management, increased stamina, joint health, mood enhancement, and cognitive benefits.  In addition, cardio exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which are neurotransmitters in the brain that promote feelings of happiness and well-being.  Incorporating regular cardio activities into your routine can contribute to a healthier and more fulfilling life.
